Ok, I got it
Anne's Mosaic Magic
Tucked away in a peaceful riverside retreat at Sackville North is an eclectic gallery of eye-catching mosaic art.
Shimmering dragonflies, waratahs, frogs, parrots, koalas, even Andy the Swagman adorn the walls, while every nook and cranny features rustic home wares and striking garden sculptures.
It's all the work of artisan Anne Heather, who individually handcrafts every piece. "i love the Australian bush, the outdoors and the colour and movement in stained glass" she said.
"Whatever shapes I find inspire the design"
You can often find Anne rummaging around disposal stores, junk and recycling yards, searching for interesting, functional pieces.
"i look at the shape and if i love it, i bring it home," she said
"i may not have a design idea for it straight away, but I'll look at it, come back to it a few times and then it comes to me"
Her works, often commissioned, include decorative symbols, decorative shovels, bird baths, tables, lamps, bells, wheelbarrows, doors, seats, milk churns, augers, ploughs, tractor seats, beakers, buckets, even a mannequin dubbed the "tiger woman"
"I recycle things that people may otherwise throw away and give them a new life" Anne said.
"People either love my tiger woman or hate her, she certainly creates conversation. You should always be looking at the wow factor when creating pieces, it makes it interesting and exciting"
Anne doesn't limit herself to any one artistic form. She's worked on fibreglass moulds, with timber, and even has her eye on transforming an old concrete retaining wall into an outdoor masterpiece.
Currently working in Hebel block, Anne is carving a mermaid sculpture, which she will soon cloak in her mosaic design.
"It’s ideal a for riverside or poolside garden" she said.
A former hairdresser and antique shop owner, Anne was a leadlight artist for 12 years, before retiring from the craft, taking up mosaic artistry in more recent years. "I've done every craft known to man, I've always been creative" She laughed.
"I'd draw and sew all the time. As a teenager I’d dream about what I’d like to do and I found an outlet for my creativity."
Anne was ultimately drawn to the texture of glass, tiles, beads, and mirrors, but she can also sculpt and draw.
"I love mosaics-it’s so much fun. Drawing up the design, finding the colours, putting it together for sale.
"I often spent up to eight hours a day here in the gallery. It's so rewarding and very hard to leave. It's my space and it's fabulous."
The famed Hawkesbury Artists and Artisans Trail inspired Anne to open her own gallery one year ago.
"I do exhibit my work in the area, but the Trail gave me the incentive i needed to open up my own gallery and workshop to show people what I do."
The mother of three and grandmother of six, expects to be designing her stylised artworks for "as long as my hands hold out"
She's even passing her creative wisdom to her grandchildren who often visit for "lessons"
Anne's Mosaic Magic is located at 278 Mitchells Road, Sackville North. For gallery opening times, contact 4579 1190
